An emo-band that reincarnates as a Sixties Summer act. Panic! at the Disco made it big, with a rather boring teenage angst songs and the world became a slightly better place then they called it quits. Former Panic! members Ryan Ross and Jon Walker made a fresh start with The Young Veins and joined forces with Jason Boesel, Alex Greenwald and Elizabeth Berg to record their debut album Take A Vacation! (they are still fond of exclamation marks).

Partial show review
May. 11th, 2010 01:42 pmNext up is the Young Veins, which features two of the former members of Panic! at the Disco, Ryan Ross and Jon Walker. The five piece band comes dressed as The Beatles circa the Ed Sullivan show and plays in the same manner. As if picking up where Panic!’s Pretty. Odd. Left off, The Young Veins’ tamed style is so reminiscent of a 60’s rock band that the only thing missing is girls swooning and screaming in the background like a Jonas Brothers concert.

Last July, emo-pop sensations Panic! at the Disco announced they were splitting up over creative differences. But some of the bandmates were clearly still seeing eye to eye: While working on Panic!'s 2008 release Pretty. Odd., guitarist Ryan Ross and bassist Jon Walker formed such a strong songwriting partnership, they decided to soldier on with a new project dubbed the Young Veins. "Ever since Pretty. Odd., we've been writing songs together, so it's been a gradual thing," Ross tells Roling Stone. "Once we knew we were going to be doing this ourselves, it freed us up to do exactly what we wanted."
With their debut Take a Vacation! (out June 8th), Ross and Walker delve deeper into the '60s pop influences they experimented with on the slickly produced Pretty. Odd. But the resulting disc is far more raw than fans might expect — and that's a good thing. Over 11 tracks clocking in at 29 minutes, Ross and Walker deliver loose, garage-rock gems that come off sounding like a dusty 45 you'd find at a garage sale. Tracks like "Change" (check out the live clip from an Atlanta show above) feature bright harmonies that call to mind the Beatles' "She Said, She Said" while "Young Veins (Die Tonight)" feature chiming, Byrds-inspired guitar riffs.

In 2008, Panic at the Disco put out a record called Pretty. Odd. The band up to that point had been plying a particularly unctuous brand of emo (their debut, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, despite being a commercial juggernaut, was self-involved and off-putting). But Pretty. Odd was another matter altogether: the band had mostly jettisoned the self-pitying caterwauling that plagued their debut in favor of bright songwriting that recalled, at its best moments, the Kinks and early Beatles. For real.

May. 4th, 2010 02:42 pmHello Friends,
We're about a month away from releasing our debut album "Take A Vacation!", and you have no idea how excited we are for you guys to finally be able to hear it. Starting today you can head over to our site and pre-order the album along with one of a few different limited deluxe packages, that in our modest opinions are pretty sweet. A Young Veins Viewmaster? You betcha. And as a bonus, if you order any of them, you get two mp3s from the album immediately, not bad huh? Check em out, and tell your friends!
Also check out our other pre-orders on Amazon (Vinyl + CD), FYE (only $7.99!), and iTunes (w/ 1 bonus song!)
Oh, and for all of you in the LA area, we're throwing a special release party over at Origami over in Echo Park on June 8. It's a pretty awesome record store, and we hope you can make it out. More details on that coming soon!

Buzznet Interview transcript
Apr. 29th, 2010 11:03 pmPart One: I'm Younger Now
Ryan: Well, I mean, I guess if you mean like going from being in a really popular band to not being in one, is that what you...?
Interviewer: Yeah, just kind of like starting over.
Ryan: I mean, I dunno. At least so far it's been really exciting. There was a lot...at least a long period of time in Panic where I wasn't really excited about it anymore. Even though this is in some ways starting over, like touring in a van and all that stuff again, at least it's like we're really proud of what we're doing and excited to be doing it.

Two years ago I was navigating the halls of the Staples Center to interview Panic at the Disco before their headlining performance on the Honda Civic Tour--stark contrast to the dark, tiny dressing room we crammed into to talk The Young Veins about Take A Vacation and their first tour as an indie band. So what's it like to start over? Despite his aura of perma-chill, Ryan Ross said, "Exciting."
