THE YOUNG VEINS

Hometown: Los Angeles
Why they matter: When Ryan Ross and Jon Walker left Panic at the Disco in July 2009 because of creative differences, they had a plan: ditch the emo melodrama and record vintage pop-rock using their Nuggets compilations and British Invasion LPs as touchstones. Mission accomplished. Their debut album, Take a Vacation, is full of catchy songwriting, Beach Boys vocal melodies, and jangly guitar lines.
You should know: The buzz around the Young Veins attracted L.A. indie rockers like Jenny Lewis and members of Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes to the band's first-ever show earlier this year. Read SPIN's review here.

THE YOUNG VEINS
Take a Vacation! (One Haven)

Release Date: June 8
The Skinny: When they left Panic! at the Disco last summer, Ryan Ross and Jon Walker cited "musical differences," which in most break-up scenarios is akin to attributing a hole-in-one to gravity. But it also happens to be a good way to keep the focus on the music, which is where their new band, the Young Veins, comes in. The outgoing duo worked closely with Phantom Planet's sunny songsmith Alex Greenwald on Take a Vacation! (whose exclamation point can't be insignificant, can it?) The result is a debut full of shorter, punchier songs bound to make Panic! fans more than a little bit curious.
Fast Fact: Take a Vacation! was produced by Rob Mathes, who has arranged and conducted music for an insane number of acts. A short list: Lou Reed, Jay-Z, Fall Out Boy, R. Kelly, Ghostface, Sade—and Luciano Pavarotti.

On The Young Veins’ debut album, Take a Vacation!, you will hear an outfit with both intellect and ambition – a band that knows exactly who they are and where they are going. As 23 year old frontman, Ryan Ross, re-imagines 60's pop, tropicalia, old New York girl groups and fuzzed-out psychedelia to Nuggets-era garage rock and Stax-inspired soul, you will hear a band that is mature beyond its years and truly excited by the craft of songwriting– uncovering what came before and anxious to see what’s ahead.

“We want to be good at our craft, whether it’s writing music or playing it live,” says Ross. “Jon and I just feel like a lot of bands have an either/or sort of feel – either they’re really poppy but don’t have a good vibe, or they have good vibe but the songs aren’t great. And we really wanted to avoid that. We feel like we’re trying to be the band that we’re missing right now.”

Ryan Ross spent his formidable years as the primary songwriter, guitarist and singer in Las Vegas’ wildly popular Panic! at the Disco, a band that rode to the top of the charts on dance-floor synths and impressive rock theatrics. However, over the course of two albums, Ross’s songwriting and musicianship began to evolve, mature and outgrow the stylistic bounds of the band. He and Panic! bassist Jon Walker had discovered their talents as a songwriting duo, and made the decision to step out on their own. Armed with new material, Ross and Walker made their departure, moved to Los Angeles, and formed what is now The Young Veins.

With Take a Vacation!, The Young Veins are that band. Recorded mostly live over the course of two short sessions at Castle Oak Studios and Sunset Sound in Los Angeles and produced by Alex Greenwald (Phantom Planet) and Rob Mathes (Panic! at the Disco, Carly Simon, Lou Reed) – and featuring guest vocals/instrumentation by fellow Californians Jason Boesel (Rilo Kiley), Danny and Michael Fujikawa (Chief) and Z Berg (The Like), the album is a stunning 29-minutes of deliberate and focused songcraft; concise pop and rock songs that embrace a dreamy California spirit but also epitomize Ross and Walker’s vast sphere of influence, ambition and artistry. “We wanted every song to have a different theme, like a specific subject,” says Ross, who splits songwriting duties with Walker, each helping the other hone and fine-tune initial ideas, finish creative thoughts and explore different stylistic directions. “We wanted them all to be little stories that you can picture in your head.”

From the first chord of album-opener “Change,” the record rocks, careens and rollicks through eleven songs, which grow and thrive amid Greenwald and Mathes’ minimal production. The band’s vital and vibrant in-studio performances, as well as their thoughtful use of impressive vintage gear, like the Wurlitzer, harmonium and Stylophone are lovingly interpreted for contemporary ears. From the breezy, fuzzed out pop of title track “Take a Vacation!” to the Spector-esque swagger of “Cape Town” and the jolting guitar of “Defiance” – to the gauzy, glimmering sheen of “Everyone But You” and the shimmering, “heels-over-head” love of “Lie to the Truth,” The Young Veins are an undeniably distinctive voice in music today, showing a knack for writing a timeless tune with a sweet, effortless delivery.

Take a Vacation! is both rousing and refined, boisterous and sophisticated, hard-hitting and full of heart. The album is a marriage of passion and perfectionism and through all of their songs ribbons a delight in melody. Take a Vacation! illustrates all that is special about Ross and Walker, gathering all their influences to create something truly exceptional.

Hey guys,

I know there's been a lot of stuff posted lately, but I won't have a chance to gather any of it together until Monday at the earliest. I will be able to approve posts, though, if any of you want to make them ;). The most important thing that's happened, I think, is that Maybe I Will is streaming here.

Guitarist also talks to NME about his new band The Young Veins

Former Panic At The Disco member Ryan Ross has admitted that quitting the band felt like "breaking up with a girlfriend".

The guitarist, who left the group with ex-bassist Jon Walker to form last July, told NME that he walked out on the Las Vegas four-piece because he didn't enjoy playing anymore.

In 2005, oddly punctuated Las Vegas emo-pop princes Panic! At the Disco found sudden fame—and scored a multi-platinum debut, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out—while still in their teens; three years later, the Pete Wentz proteges’ ambitious, swirly-psychedelic followup Pretty.Odd. pleased critics, but left many of their young fans flummoxed.

Now, after parting ways with frontman Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith, guitarist Ryan Ross and bassist Jon Walker have reconstituted themselves (with two additional new members) as the Young Veins, whose heavily ’60s-Brit-pop-influenced debut Take a Vacation! arrives June 8. Suffice it to say, someone discovered Dad’s Kinks records. And his Zombies ones too.

This post is from Out the Other's 2010 Bonnaroo Artist Previews, where I will be posting previews of all the musical acts playing the 2010 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. Please check out and subscribe to the full site to learn more about all of this year's performers.

It's hard to imagine liking anything that branched off of Panic! At the Disco, but I have to say I'm delighted that two former members of that emo-pop Vegas sideshow have quit the band and created their own project, The Young Veins. I'm even more delighted to report that they sound nothing like Panic!, and the two tracks floating around the internet from their debut album, due on June 8, promise a record full of retro rock more akin to the Beatles, Kinks and Monkees.

Last summer, primary Panic! songwriter, guitarist and singer Ryan Ross and bassist Jon Walker left the band to form The Young Veins after discovering their talents as a songwriting duo. Together they moved to California and recorded their debut with friends from their Panic! days, and fleshed out a live lineup with the addition of drummer Nick Murray, bassist Andy Soukal and keyboard player Nick White. Take a Vacation will be released the Tuesday before Bonnaroo, and the band's performance at the festival will kick off a coast-to coast tour in June and July with Rooney. I, for one, can't wait to hear the whole album, and to check out the band in Manchester next month.

The Young Veins play the Troo Music Lounge on Friday at 1:20 p.m.

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Ryan Ross may be the singer of a new band on an indie label, but the 23-year-old is hardly a music industry neophyte. The leader of five-piece rock outfit the Young Veins still spends a lot of time fielding questions about his former band, Panic! at the Disco.

"I've talked a good amount about Panic!, but that's because there hadn't been much else going on with us until now," says Ross, whose new group with Panic! guitarist Jon Walker will release its debut album, "Take a Vacation!," June 8 on One Haven Music. "Hopefully once people hear the album and see us perform, those questions will sort of die down."continue reading )

When Ryan Ross and Jon Walker started writing new material for the follow up to Panic! at the Disco’s 2008 album “Pretty.Odd.” they had no idea the journey they were about to embark on. After two successful albums it was evident that their writing was evolving into something that didn’t really fit the scope of Panic’s distinct sound. Any true artist knows the value of following one’s own instincts and that’s exactly what Ross and Walker did. Making what had to be one of the biggest decisions of their lives the two cited creative differences, left the band and continued writing new music as a duo. While the critics questioned them quizzically and fans responded (sometimes) erratically, the two never looked back knowing that they had done exactly what they needed to do.

And oh what a difference a year makes! On June 8th Ross and Walker are set to release their debut album “Take a Vacation!” under their new band name The Young Veins (joined by Andy Soukal on bass, Nick White on keys and Nick Murry on drums). For anyone looking for Panic! at the Disco revisited, this probably isn’t the band for you. However, if you’re a fan of vintage sounds, catchy choruses, short upbeat ditties and a guaranteed psychedelic trip in a time machine from track to track then you’ve hit the jackpot. Clearly influenced by Southern California culture The Young Veins wanted to write a collection of songs that each had their own style and story. The 29 minute long album will conjure up images of old and undoubtedly remind you of many past greats from The Beatles to The Beach Boys.

While many might think that this band is doing things the hard way by trading in packed arenas for tiny little clubs and throngs of screaming teens for new audiences that they have to win over night after night (okay who am I kidding, the screaming teens will undoubtedly still be in tow), The Young Veins wouldn’t trade this for the world and it’s that kind of determination and dedication to their craft that will undoubtedly win over new fans.

I recently had the chance to talk to Jon Walker about The Young Veins, the new album, and everything in between. continue reading )

Origami Vinyl is hosting an exclusive in-store with The Young Veins on June 8th to celebrate their debut album "Take A Vacation" out on One Haven Music and the only way to attend is to pre-order their LP at Origami starting today!

Primarily the musical project of Ryan Ross and Jon Walker from Panic! At The Disco, The Young Veins formed when their songwriting began to progress beyond Panic’s signature style. Take A Vacation!, produced by Alex Greenwald (Phantom Planet) and Rob Mathes (Panic!, Carly Simon, Lou Reed), is an album that re-imagines some of the most enduring musical styles of the ‘60s, including surf rock, psychedelia and brit-pop. Laced in a dreamy California spirit, Take A Vacation! exudes warmth and joyful energy. The band will hit the road in mid-June for their Bonnaroo debut and a national summer tour with Rooney, but first, they will be marking their record release with this special album release party and in-store performance in the town they now call home.

FORMER PANIC! At The Disco guitarist Ryan Ross and bassist Jon Walker are gearing up to release their debut album with The Young Veins.

Ryan and Jon recorded Take A Vacation! last autumn with the help of Rob Mathes (who produced Panic!'s second album Pretty. Odd) and Phantom Planet frontman Alex Greenwald, before expanding their line-up to include bassist Andy Soukal, keyboard player Nick White and drummer Nick Murray.

"We had almost all the songs finished before we went in to record so I think it allowed it to be a relatively stress-free recording process," Ryan explains. "It was great to have a lot of our friends help us out and play on these songs. It was different in many ways for Jon and I, and it was probably the most challenging, exciting and fun recording I've been part of!"

Ryan is also keen to point out that he and Jon are still good friends with their former Panic! bandmates, frontman Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith.

"We just had different opinions on how we wanted to do things, which unfortunately weren't things which we could change," he says of the split. "I think different musical tastes had a lot to do with it.

"When you've been part of something for so long it can be acrimonious, but Jon and I don't wish any ill will toward those guys," Ryan adds. "We're just happy to be playing music we love."

The album Take A Vacation! will be release on July 5 through One Haven Music.

The Burning Ear was less than impressed:
When Panic At The Disco’s second album disappointed everyone who had loved their first, half the band left and eventually formed The Young Veins. No surprise that they sound nothing like Panic. It’s solid classic-rock, just nothing special.

And this is sort of random, but Ryan hooked these guys (The America Yeah) up with a producer:
ML: Tell me about your opportunity to record at Palms Studio with Mark Everton Gray?
LL: I mean it sorta just fell into my lap...our lap.
TM: His lap and then I joined on.
LL: Then I transferred it to his lap. And I was like, here you can have it in your lap as well. [Laughter] To be honest, we just went out, had a couple drinks with him, turned into a long night of debauchery, and at the end of it he was maybe drunkenly saying, ‘I’m gonna record your record.’ Then two days later, showed up at my house, listened to music. He got a recommendation from a friend of mine and his. And then just went with it. I never thought it was really gonna happen, always thought it was too good to be true. And then it went from, ‘I’m gonna record one song to three songs to a full length album.’ And we actually did record 12 songs, but we didn’t use the others.

ML: How did it fall into your lap, who was this mutual friend?
LL: It’s this kid named Ryan that me and Mark know together, he used to play in a band Panic! At The Disco, and now he plays in The Young Veins. And Ryan was in town ‘cause he moved to California and he’s like, ‘Come get a drink,’ then me and the friend at nine in the morning is telling me he’s gonna record our record that I thought was gonna take a lot of money to record. We had planned on recording it ourselves and planned on budgeting five to six grand into recording. It was a big financial and questioning weight off my shoulders. It was cool.

Listening to the debut album of the Young Veins throws me back in time… but I can’t decide if I’ve slid all the way back to the days of 60s-era rock, which seems to be the popular opinion, or if I’ve started to take the slide and come to a shuddering halt in downtown Halifax in the mid-90’s.

Other people are crying Beatles on this fresh music from Ryan Ross and Jon Walker (both whom you’ve probably seen gallivanting around your MTV with Russian dolls or a bunch of vaudeville performers as a crucial part of the band Panic at the Disco), Andy Soukal (who is worth a follow on Twitter, let me tell you), Nick White (who you might have seen tooling around on tour with Bright Eyes and in Tilly and the Wall), and Nick Murray (who I know nothing about, sorry bud, but he gets points for some kick-ass linkage on his twitter account. ‘Exile’ outtakes? Yes, please). Instead, I am conjuring images of Sloan’s Coax Me and Thrush Hermit’s From The Back of the Film. They live in LA, and seem to like the weather there, but I think we should start a petition for the guys in the Young Veins to move to Halifax. The reception would be very, very warm.continue reading )

Young Veins is a fresh beginning in many ways for ex-Panic! At The Disco members Ryan Ross and Jon Walker. But for both rockers it meant not only putting faith in their songs but also in their voices, as neither were the primary singer in their former band. Ross admits that when he started it was rather intimidating. Ross says it's "very interesting" for both him and Walker, explaining, quote "It's like the most intimate and most personal thing you can do is sing in front of a crowd of strangers you don't know." Walker adds, quote, "Once you do it, for me I really feel like it's opened up my mind to a whole different side of music that back before we were writing songs or writing songs [considered] that we would have to sing them live." Young Veins' upcoming album "Take A Vacation," arriving June 8th, not only showcases Ross and Walker's individual vocal talents, but also showcases the group's abilities with harmony.

With the seperation of the emo sensation Panic! At The Disco, comes a new project composed by former members, known as The Young Veins.

Guitarist Ryan Ross and bassist John Wauitarist formed a strong songwriting partnership and combined their creative differences to form their new band "The Young Veins".

Their style can be compared to a garage band experimenting with 60s retro pop. At first glance, they have that flair that Los Bunkers from Chile have.

On June 8th, The Young Veins will debut their first album titled Take a Vacation! which will consist of 11 fresh tracks rounding at about 30 minutes the entire album; short and simple yet refreshing to the ear.

California-based five-piece the Young Veins is gearing up for the release of itss debut full-length, Take A Vacation!, which will be out officially June 8 via One Haven Music. But if you can't wait that long to get a taste of its dreamy beach-pop, the album's lead single, "Change," is now available for download on the band's website.

The Young Veins is a songwriting project born from Ryan Ross and Jon Walker, formally of Panic! At The Disco, when the duo realized their sonic aesthetics were growing outside the bounds of their original band. Now the guys work as a songwriting team. "Sometimes Jon will have an idea started and he'll bring it to me and we'll finish it together or vice versa," frontman Ryan Ross tells CMJ of their writing process. "Other times we'll both pick up the guitar and start from nothing and write it all together. Usually when we do it this way it either comes together quickly or not at all. But in my opinion, when we are able to do it like that those are the best [songs]."
